Straw Hat Pizza Commercial Wins Telly Award

The Straw Hat Pizza Cooperative has won the 2003 Telly Award for its “Lounge Lizard” television commercial. The Telly Awards were founded in 1980 to showcase and give recognition to outstanding non-network and cable commercials. With winning entries judged against a high standard of excellence, the Telly has become one of the most sought-after awards in the television commercial, video, and film industries.

The Telly Awards recognized Straw Hat’s “Lounge Lizard” entry for its light-hearted humor, creativity, and eye-catching quick pace. One in a string of television spots produced by Next Marketing & Beard Boy Productions, the commercial pokes fun at imposters and humorously highlights the regional pizza chain’s quality product and California pedigree.

Here is the commercial:

“We’re very honored to receive the Telly Award and all the positive attention” said Kevyn Johnston, president of Next Marketing, “Straw Hat Pizza is a unique and fun place, and we are pleased that that message came across in the ads. They were as fun to make as they are to watch.”

Joshua V. Richman, president and CEO of Straw Hat Pizza, said that the campaign had been very successful in building awareness of the forty four-year-old family dining concept. “We take pride in our marketing program, and we are delighted that we’ve been recognized by the industry in this way,” said Richman.

Straw Hat Pizza Named Franchisor Of The Year

The Straw Hat Pizza Cooperative has been named 2003 Franchisor of the Year by the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers (AAFD). The AAFD is a national non-profit trade association representing the rights and interests of franchisees and independent dealers throughout the United States. The AAFD was formed in 1992 with the mission of "Bringing Fairness to Franchising." Each year the AAFD recognizes one franchise organization for exemplary franchise practices with its Franchisor of the Year Award.

“The selection of the Straw Hat Pizza Cooperative as the AAFD Franchisor of the Year is a testament to the premise that fair franchising, or in this case licensing, is good business,” said AAFD Chair, Robert Purvin. “Straw Hat’s license agreement embodies fairness, and as a cooperative, the company takes maximum advantage of the group purchasing synergies that should be the rule in franchising,” reported Purvin.

“The Straw Hat Cooperative is very pleased to be recognized in this manner by the AAFD,” said Joshua Richman, Straw Hat President and CEO. “This award underscores the benefits of our cooperative system; a commitment to service, support, and value, while keeping the interests of our Membership as our foremost concern,” continued Richman. “With so many excellent franchise opportunities available today, it is extremely gratifying to be singled out as Franchisor of the Year.”
